Default Gaming: The Controversy of Our Youth

Well I have to do a project on a well known controversial topic. Video games. Does it encourage violence in our society? I'd like to hear your guys' (and kyarna's) thoughts on the matter. First I have to present both sides without any bias towards a side. Then I'll explain where I stand and why. Let's hear it gamers...are we violent? I know I'm not

....try not to kill this one..

/sigh...

Do I have to? I've said it sooooo many times...

No, video games do not make people violent. Vlad the Impaler didn't play Grand Theft Auto. They don't tell murderers to play teletubbies to stop them from striking twice, don't tell me to play non-violent games to stop me from murdering the first time. (That came out alittle wrong, but y'know what I mean)

If anything gaming releases pint up energy (unless the game is frustrating. In which case it adds to the anger).

I have to admit something...I played GTA: San Andreas and it did boil my blood alittle bit. Not because, I love to shoot hookers or chop people up with helicopter blades (pretty awesome), but because of those DAMN FLIGHT TRAINING MISSIONS! TOOK ME LITERALY FOREVER! I stopped playing the game for like 4 months. Then, when I came back to it, I had no idea how the controls went and I aced it. That made me even madder....I have to stop writing and think happy thoughts now.

The College I attend, Dawson, rescently had a Shooting, making 2 deaths, 1 Crippled, and 1 Who was shot in the head and is now a vegtable.

The shooter came from "vampirefreaks.com" and he Clearly said He wanted to do harm.

His Reasonning? "Life is like a Video game, we will die sooner or later, might aswell make it now"

And witha picture of himself in a Black Trench holding a shotgun He says "ready For Action"

Video games induces Violence in the Mentally Diluded.

Video games in a sense do make people violent. In a study conducted around the 1960's, childern were exposed to a video depicting a women beating up a inflatable punching bag. When the kids were put in a room with the same punching bag they mocked the actions of the women from the vidoe. This would suggest that in fact they do make us violent. The only flaw is that these kids were around the ages of 4-7 making them very suspitible to influences, basically monkey see monkey do. With the rating system on video games now in days it is geared to keep younger kids away from more violent games. It doesn't always work as parents will buy their kids a violent game but atleast they are trying. Video games do not make a kid become violent for the rest of his life but the child may try to imitate the behavior they see in the games.

And in a British Study It was concluded that Video games generate Anger in people.

And in an American Study about that Study they found that The people became angry at the game, and that after playing it their stress and anger level was lower then then before they played.

Still, Television has more of an impact. Remeber the Power Rangers? And how everybody in the School Yard would Kick others in imitation?
Remeber the Stabbing over a conflict of Pokémon? (Or was it over Pokémon Cards?)

Well it all comes down to the indivual and how stable they are, a person who is unstable will seek out violence and then replicate it, the game didnt make them violent but it does give them ideas on how to go about the violence they want to do. A normal person will use the game as a outlet for violence that they dont release in the real world since we all have atleast a little darkness in us all.

And remeber that beating a dummy is something no one would have an issue doing, lol after all its a dummy, its makes the test totally invalid for the argurment it trys to support. Not to mention that its very young suceptable kids following the actions of a real older person which is a stronger suggestion than watching a video character perform the same action.

So it comes down to violent people perform violent acts no matter what, people who play video games are people who like to play video games, people who try to copy violent video games are violent people who like to play video games and who have no sence of imagination

Video games like TV don't make people violent. Violent people use the violence in games as inspiration for violent acts.

Check this out German school shooting happened recently. The guy cried for help for years and no-one listened. I think that causes violence.

As usual the blame goes on computer games - way to try and blames the symptoms instead of the root problems. A lot of kids understood what happened at Columbine when the parents didn't. It wasn't Doom or any other computer game at fault.

Here is the shooter's (Sebastian B) explanation before his attempted massacre. Don't watch if it might offend you. I don't know how much he was bullied there is not much news on this.

Scary stuff huh.
More of his videos:

This is a compilation.

If you want more look for Bastian B and ResistantX and emsdetten.

Google seems to come up with a shooting for 2002.

I think games might contribute a little, but someone has to be pretty unstable for something like this to happen. And that kind of instability probably builds up over a long time and from many sources IMO, but what do I know :P

Or if that doesn't help you:

"I've played Grand Theft Auto, and I've never killed anyone or stolen anyone's car" -Paul Mahdi

Or if you're going for the other vantage point

In my opinion, video games CAN make people violent. It's a POSSIBILITY, and it depends on the person.

For children and teens, parents should be responsible enough to determine what their child can handle. If the kid knows what they're seeing is fake and that it wouldn't work in real life, there is no harm in him or her playing it.

On the other hand, if the person can't tell the difference, it could make it easier for that person to commit a violent act. It all comes down to how well the player understands what is really going on, and the responsibility of the player to act properly.

It all starts with the parents not knowing what their kid can handle and still know that it's fake. If parents would do this, then they could determine whether or not they should get the game for their child.

YOU HEAR THAT, JACK THOMPSON?! IF THE KID CAN'T HANDLE IT, IT'S THE PARENTS' JOBS TO KNOW! NOT THE GAME COMPANIES'!

I <3 throwing a tirade at Jack Thompson ^^

Yes, they can make people violent, but the worst part is that they ruin peoples health, mentally and physically. I think physically a lot more though.

Kids (usually under 12) have young impressionable minds. they shouldent be playing m games. how many times have you seen an 8 year old running around yelling "WHO LIVES IN A PINEAPPLE UNDER THE SEA!!" they tend to copy things they see on tv, in real life or the games. if an 8 year old is playing gta he willl probably copy some of the things that tony montana (or whatever the guys name is) does. im not saying that he'll steal cars and beat up hookers, but he will probably yell and cuss some, and act violently somewhat to people. but the problem isnt the kids. its the parents. what type of kid has acess to 50$ to buy a game, let alone 150$ and up to buy the system to play it on. ignorant parents are buying their kids gta and complaining that their kids are too violent. wtf?? i saw a family with a 5 year old boy buying an m (mature) rated game. FOR THE KID. now the casier was actually the only intelligent one. "this is an m rated game, you know that right?" Parents: "Ya, but he knows its not real." OMG. A five year old cant rationalize things like that. they want to go live with spongebob down in the ocean, and they belive that you can. If he sees someone kill someone in a game, he will think its ok to kill, and once thats implanted in his brain at a young age, its hard to unteach that. hey, i didnt have my first gaming system untill i was 13. i played only kirby games on my gamecube. but because i was older, i didnt want to go jumping armound dressed in pink sucking up my enemies. games only make you violent if you let them be. in all essence, video games should make you LESS violent. if you get your frustrations out playing a video game by punching pixels, you supposedly wont have any anger or frustrations left to let out on something that can get hurt by getting punched or shot.
